La Coruna

What a surprising place, we expected an industrial port with not much to see but were pleasantly surprised.  I was particularly over joyed with the fact that there was clean, hot and unlimited water showers just what I desperately needed after days at sea.

Arrival day was pretty much that, we slept, ate, slept, ate, quick clean of Magnum and longer clean of ourselves.  On Saturday we went exploring with first stop a Supermarket but La Coruna had a lovely old town to explore along the way, beautiful old buildings and lovely green parks before reaching the main shopping district.  The main port was in the centre of the town and there was another marina, must be early in the season as both the marinas were only about 30% full.

Saturday afternoon and Sunday we had some lovely walks along promenades which ran all along the coast line. There was one particularly large beach with rolling Atlantic waves, couple of surfers were having fun, this amazed me since this was in the middle of a busy town which went on for miles.

We walked out to the Torres de Hercules the lighthouse which on Friday morning I had been watching and desperate to reach, it can be seen for around 25 miles so I had been watching it for hours!  The coastline which has seemed so daunting in the dark now looked far more approachable.

We really enjoyed our time in La Coruna, there were very few tourists apart from the boaties (of which there were a couple of English boats in the marina) and it would actually make a really nice city break location.

Oh also I was both pleased and disappointed that I managed to avoid the very large Zara and Mango, would love to have just popped in for a look but knowing that my new budget is no shopping ever again! I resisted temptation.

  1. Hello Amanda and Mark. Got back to the UK on Saturday to "almost winter" weather. So happy to see your updates from Galicia. Like I said in my emails "La Coruña" is a very nice city, and yes, the beach is right there in the city centre, not so much in Vigo, but still not too far away either.
Great to catch up with your adventures. Oh and by the way Amanda, just in case you need an excuse, and in case you didn't know, Zara and Mango are both Spanish firms, so you can enjoy a bit of retail therapy, as a Spanish souvenir. Tee-hee! : ) Keep having fun. Wondering if you're still around the Vigo area. I did get your email with the lovely Magnum anchored off the Cíes Islands. : ) xx
