Jost Van Dyke/Little Jost and Marina Cay/Trellis Bay – Wet and Windy

Next morning and we set sail for Jost Van Dyke, another BVI just north of Tortola¸we had lovely sail, quite hard on the wind but with only 12-16 knots is was lovely.  We headed to Great harbour to get a buoy and go ashore but on reaching the bay all buoys we full, it was packed with charter boats, we dropped anchor in deep water so that we could have a quick trip ashore.  People rave about Foxy’s bar which is the place to be in the evening but going ashore during the day it is very sleepy.  The main street runs along the beach front which is fringed with Palm trees and the odd hammock.  We visited Christines bakery and indulged in a cake/cookie but as we had no plans to stay for rum punch/food so we had seen the sights within 30 minutes and headed back to Magnum.

Foxy's bar - what a nice welcome ashore
As the anchorage was not safe for us to stay for the evening we headed to Little Jost which was also pretty busy, they are a couple of beautiful off lying islands but these were too rolly to anchor in but after a bit of searching we found a spot to anchor and had a peaceful night – ohh and another spot of Johnny Depp boat.

Next morning, quick swim and then we were off, plan was to sail south east and back towards the east end of Tortola, the forecast we had said around 8 knots of wind, we actually had 15-20 knots and bashed our way up wind through the swell.  Amanda concentrated hard in her pirate outfit!

We reached our target destination of White Bay on Guana Island but the swell was rolling in and there was no chance of stopping so we carried on.

Guana island is named after this rock with looks like an Iguanas head
After passing a few anchorages which were also suffering with the swell we finally anchored off Marina Cay, which is tiny island with a small resort and surrounded by a coral reef.  As we dropped anchor the heavens opened and it was torrential, this continued for the remainder of the day and we curled up on the sofa to watch a film – not before Mark made sure the rain water did not go to waste and cleaned the decks in the rain!

With the wind and rain overnight it was a restless one, there are buoys off Marina Cay and they are tucked in closer to the reef but if you want to anchor you are further out so were not quite as sheltered.  Good news was we had up to date weather but bad news was the stronger winds were to continue so our options were limited along with our energy.  We upped anchor to find some more shelter, we moved 200 meters into the buoys and decided that was it for the day, yep we would have to pay but we needed to rest. Weather reminded windy and occasional wet for next 2 days and we sat on the buoy, we ashore but there is not much to see on the island but we did also manage to get a free taxi across to Trellis Bay on Tortola, again not a huge amount to see but nice little local craft shop, not that any could be squeezed onto the boat!

We had gained some shelter from the wind, we had pinched some good wifi from Marina Cay which we managed to pick up on the boat and used the washing machines ashore, so time was not wasted but the next day we were desperate to move on.
